Nintendo Outruns Sony On Games Sales

According to a market report made by the analyst group iSuppli, it seems that the success of Wii, added to the sales of DS, boosted Nintendo game sales in the third quarter of the year to the first place, outrunning Sony, who was usually number one.

Game sales for the two Nintendo platforms reached 1.24 billion dollars during the third quarter of 2007, which represents 31 percent more than the previous quarter and more than 200 percent more than what it sold last year.

This gives Nintendo a big lead on Sony, with its PS3, PS2 and PSP, which had sales of a total of 1 billion dollars for the same period of time, and also the 317.8 million dollars made by Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Xbox 1.

The facts show that while Sony made no significant raise in its sales and Microsoft has gained a slight increase over the last year, Nintendo takes the lead with its up 31 percent.

iSuppli foretells that Wii software sales could exceed 1 billion dollars in the Christmas quarter, due to its mass market appeal, due to Sony’s high prices and the fact that Xbox targets more serious gamers. The total of the Nintendo games is predicted to come in at 2.15 billion dollars in the fourth quarter of 2007, and 2.37 billion dollars in the same period of the year 2008.

David Carnevale, iSuppli vice president of multimedia content and distribution, declared that Nintendo is very likely to hold on its lead, since it is expected to ship around 200 new titles and the new flagship title of Nintendo, which would encourage gamers to exercise at their homes, using the Wii Balance Boards that permit activities such as yoga, aerobics and stretching.

The upcoming Wii Fit is expected to draw a wider audience to Nintendo’s home console, boosting its sales.
