The Dallas Mavericks managed to move their biggest mental block a few inches Thursday night as they beat the Golden State Warriors in Oakland to get a bit of revenge from last year's stunning playoff loss.
Jason Terry was once again in great shape and scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, while team mate Jerry Stackhouse delivered a key 3-pointer in the final minute as the visiting Mavericks kept the Warriors winless with a 120-115 triumph.
"We showed a lot of maturity tonight," Terry said. "When they made shots, we just came back and kept going. We came in, we played well and got the monkey off our back."
Josh Howard was also on target and finished the game with 24 points, while reigning league MVP Dirk Nowitzki recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds. Devin Harris added 21 points for the Mavericks who now have a 4-1 record.
Mavericks’ last season’s nightmare, Baron Davis had a great game this time as well and scored 15 of his 37 points in the final frame, but in the final seconds he failed to converd a three pointer that would have tied the game. This is the Warriors’ fifth loss of just as many games played this regular season. Rookie Kelenna Azubuike collected 27 points and 11 boards, while Al Harrington chipped in with 20 points.
One of the difference making facts was that the Warriors shot just 16-of-30 from the free throw line.
"We did everything we were supposed to do for the most part. We played extremely hard, but the free throw line killed us. If we make half those free throws we win the game," Harrington said.
In the final frame of the game the Mavericks were one point in front and Stackhouse converted his wide-open three-pointer from the left corner with 37 seconds left. Baron Davis answered with a short jump shot, but Dallas kept on going and Stackhouse made one of his two free throws. Andris Biedrins grabbed the rebound and called a Warriors' timeout.
The game resumed and Davis received the ball on an inbound pass and launched his wide-open three-point throw from the point of the arc but failed to convert. The ball bounced off the front of the rim with five seconds left of the game. Harris hit two free throws to seal the victory.
