The Boston Celtics remain undefeated in this season. They won 101-86 on road over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, thus matching the best season start in the last 20 years of franchise history.
A similar successful start in came about for Boston in 1987-88 when, led by Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, the Celtics won the first six games of the regular season. However, Boston’s best start is 14-0, set in 1957-58.
Paul Pierce was Celtics’ leading scorer and he finished the game with 31 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and shot 14-for-14 from the foul line.
"I have a great cast around me," said Pierce about the two acquisitions made by the Celtics this off-season: Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.
"These guys are fun to be around. Not just as basketball players, but also good guys off the court. You know you can't win all the games, but when you have a locker room like this, it makes it easier."
Kevin Garnett scored 18 points and hauled 11 rebounds to record another double-double. He has recorded one in every game since the season started. Veteran guard Ray Allen closely followed with 15 points, all of them scored in the third quarter after he was held scoreless in the first half.
During the second quarter Pierce showed his frustration for being fouled hard by Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley by doing some push-ups on the court between his free throws to taunt the Indiana crowd.
"I thought it was a flagrant foul. I got hit on the back of the head. I tried to use it to fire up my team mates," Pierce said.
Pierce’s push-ups worked. At the time the teams were tied, but then Pierce scored 13 points before the end of the second quarter to give Boston the upper hand.
For the Pacers, Danny Granger provided the scoring and he finished with 24 points and seven rebounds. Jamaal Tinsley scored 14 points for the Pacers (3-4) who have lost four games in a row since opening 3-0 under former Celtics coach Jim O'Brien.
