Sony BMG and Yahoo! Expand Deal

Yahoo! announced yesterday that it has expanded its partnership with Sony BMG, in a move to bring the latter’s music videos to its Yahoo Video platform. Thanks to this new agreement, more video content will be added to Yahoo’s catalog and Sony BMG’s artists’ works will be available for user-generated Yahoo audiovisual content.

This agreement came as part of a current licensing deal between the two companies, but for Sony BMG, it represents just the latest move in a series of similar music video agreements that it made recently. Last month, the company, which represents a joint venture between Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann, announced that it would start to offer videos on MySpace.com, for example. Also, the label already has a deal in place with Google and with its popular video sharing web site, YouTube.

For Yahoo, this recently announced agreement with Sony BMG represents the first time that the company has licensed content for use within user-generated video and it reflects the growing popularity of the practice on the Web. The unauthorized use of audio or video content on social networking web sites and not only has started to lead to tension and even lawsuits between the media and Internet companies, so taking the decision to partner with Sony BMG proved nothing else than Yahoo’s wisdom.

Sony BMG will bring Yahoo’s users famous artists such as Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, P!ink, Nelly Furtado, Kelly Clarkson and others.
