Arenas Out with Knee Surgery, Wizards Continue Wining

Gilbert Arenas, Washington Wizards All-Star guard, will be out of NBA action for three months after undergoing surgery on his left knee. This is his second this year.

The surgery intervention repaired a partial tear in Arenas’s medial meniscus cartilage, the Wizards said in a statement. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound guard has missed the past three games after a great performance against the Minnesota on Nov. 16. During the day after the game Arenas felt that something was wrong with his knee. He reportedly experienced some soreness and swelling in the knee after the win.

The Tampa, Florida native underwent surgery at Sibley Memorial Hospital, team physician Marc Connell said. The team physician has also described the procedure in a statement released by the Wizards.

"I repaired a partial tear of Gilbert's left medial meniscus. In addition, he had a non-weight bearing articular surface defect in the trochlea treated by a microfracture. We are optimistic that he will be able to return to action in three months," Connell said.

Arenas will begin his rehabilitation program next week.

In the statement released by the Wizards, Club President Ernie Grunfeld also said a few words about Arenas’s delicate situation. He underlined the fact that the All-star guard worked very hard over the summer in order to be in top form at the beginning of the season and that he was really starting to play at a high level until the injury occurred.

"We expect Gilbert to make a full recovery,'' Grunfeld added.

Arenas missed the Wizards' final eight games last season and their four playoff contests as well and also because of a knee surgery that repaired a torn cartilage in his knee on April 5.

The 25-year-old has recorded very good averages so far: 22.4 points and 5.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds in eight games this season. The Wizards are surely missing Arenas, but so far they didn’t showed it on court. They are 6-5 and recently won 114-111 over the Charlotte to push their wining streak at 6 in a row.
