Amy Winehouse Cancels Remaining 2007 Gigs

British singer Amy Winehouse has too much on her plate right now to continue touring, her doctor has deemed, hence the cancellation of remaining concerts for 2007.

A representative for the troubled singer announced Tuesday that Winehouse has been ordered by her doctor to refrain from further efforts inherent to touring. She has called off all remaining concerts and public appearances previously scheduled for the year.

“The rigors involved in touring and the intense emotional strain that Amy has been under in recent weeks have taken their toll,” Winehouse rep Tracey Miller said in a statement. “In the interests of her health and well-being, Amy has been ordered to take complete rest and deal with her health issues.”

Winehouse had recently embarked on a tour in Britain and Ireland but the effort she was subjecting herself to was obvious. In mid-November, fans attending a concert in Birmingham booed her mercilessly and even walked out of the concert, as she sang in a shaky voice and slurred lyrics.

The singer told the audience at one point: “To them people booing, wait 'til my husband gets out of incarceration. And I mean that.” She eventually walked off the stage herself, but not before performing some of her hits.

Her spokesperson later told BBC that it had been a particularly difficult day for her as she had visited husband Blake Fielder-Civil for the first time in prison. She had decided she owed it to the fans though to not cancel the show.

Blake is incarcerated on charges of assaulting a bartender earlier this year and allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice. He will remain in jail until Jan. 18, awaiting his trial, and spend Christmas behind bars.

He and another man allegedly assaulted a barman at a pub in London in June; the injured man allegedly required metal plates fitted in his face after the attack. Authorities then learned that Blake had attempted to get one of the witnesses to the assault to change his evidence, by offering him money. He was subsequently arrested.

If convicted, Amy Winehouse’s 25-year-old husband faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, on charges of grievous bodily harm for the alleged attack on the barman and attempting to pervert justice.

The 24-year-old singer told fans in a statement: “I cannot give it my all onstage without my Blake. I am so sorry but I do not want to do the shows half-heartedly. I love singing. My husband is everything to me and without him it is just not the same.”

Ticket refunds will be made available at the point of purchase. There were no plans to reschedule the dates, her rep said.

Her parents and parents-in-law are reportedly hopeful that Winehouse will check into rehab. Her mother-in-law, hair salon owner Georgette Civil, 42, was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: “Now we can get her into rehab and persuade her to get the professional help she needs… Cancelling the tour is the best thing she could have done.

“Now she can concentrate on getting better and keeping herself clean. She needs to be left alone to get herself together.” Civil added: “She is finding it very hard without Blake and is absolutely exhausted. Amy is not eating or sleeping properly, has no one to look after her and is having a tough time.”
