Too Much Salt in the Americans Diet

There is too much hidden salt in everyday foods and experts consider this as a real danger. They say that 75 percent of the consumed sodium comes from packaged foods. While there are obvious ones, like salty chips and snacks, others like bread, cheese and chocolate can be high in salt too. A recommended dose of salt should be no more than a teaspoon or less per day. But because of the hidden salt in the packaged food, most of us eat twice this much.

There are really health concerns around consuming more salt than recommended as this can raise blood pressure and lead to heart disease. The American medical association stated that if people would cut in half their sodium intake, 150,000 lives would be saved per year.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest asked that government should take measures to limit the amount of salt manufacturers should put in foods they produce and sell and also they should provide warning labels on their products with high sodium.

In this matter, this Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration held hearings to discuss the issue of creating warning labels or setting limits for sodium in packaged foods.

The British government has already set reduced sodium targets for foods and presented education ads to the public.
