‘Into The Wild’ Tops Broadcast Film Critics’ Preferences

Sean Penn’s critically acclaimed "Into the Wild" is apparently the Broadcast Film Critics Association favorite as well scoring seven nominations for this year’s annual Critics’ Choice Awards.

The nominees were announced Tuesday morning by actress Marisa Tomei live in New York’s Times Square, featuring "Into the Wild," with seven nods, including Best Picture, two for writer/director Sean Penn, and three for cast members Emile Hirsch, Hal Halbrook and Catherine Keener, "Juno" starring Ellen Page as a teenager facing an unplanned pregnancy, with six nominations, and a string of five flicks, "Atonement," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men," "Sweeney Todd" and "Hairspray" which scored five noms each, including Best Picture except for "Hairspary."

The Coen brothers’ dark crime thriller "No Country for Old Men," has already won top film honors from New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.

Also competing for the Best Movie title are "American Gangster," "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," "The Kite Runner," and "There Will Be Blood."

The 13th annual awards will be presented during a live VH1 broadcast Jan. 7, with D.L. Hughley as host. The Critics Choice Awards, organized by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest film critics’ organization in the Western Hemisphere, have a strong track record when it comes to predicting Oscar winners.

Nominations for Best Actor include George Clooney for his part in "Michael Clayton," Johnny Depp for "Sweeney Todd" and Daniel Day-Lewis, "There Will Be Blood." Actors like newcomer Michael Cera and Cate Blanchett received dual recognition. Cera for his parts in "Superbad" and "Juno" while Blanchett for best actress in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and a supporting actress for her Dylanesque appearance in "I'm Not There."

In addition to Blanchett, Angelina Jolie also scored a nod for the critically acclaimed "A Mighty Heart," based on the life of Daniel Pearl, the journalist who was murdered in Pakistan in 2002.
