Nickelodeon, the television network which screens Jamie Lynn Spears’ show “Zoey 101”, is considering a special for its young viewers about sex and love, Associated Press reported.

Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year old sister of Britney Spears, OK magazine Wednesday that she was 12 weeks pregnant and plans to have the baby.

According to the OK Magazine, Jamie Lynn confirmed the pregnancy through a home test. She later paid a visit to the doctor, who corroborated the news. She said she revealed the news to her parents shortly before Thanksgiving.

She named the father as her boyfriend, Casey Aldridge, the son of a paper-mill worker in her home state of Louisiana whom she reportedly met at church.

After Spears interview, Nickelodeon issued a statement saying, "We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being."

The filming for “Zoey 101” has finished and episodes are scheduled to begin airing in February. Asked by the magazine about what message her pregnancy might send to young people, she replied, "I definitely don't think it's something you should do; it's better to wait. But I can't be judgmental because it's a position I put myself in."

Associated Press said Nickelodeon is talking with veteran newswoman Linda Ellerbe about a special show. “I think it’s important that something be done,” Ellerbee told The Associated Press on Thursday. “But I think it’s important that it be done in a measured way, and not just to feed the beast of news stories”.

Ellerbee wants to create a show that will be aa broad discussion about how people know they're in love, when is the right time to have sex and what are the value systems of their parents and friends.

A Nickelodeon spokesman, Dan Martinsen, confirmed the discussions but said no decision had been made.

Jamie Lynn Spears is perhaps the most famous young teenager to become publicly pregnant in recent years, and her situation immediately became the topic of the day. The news of Spears' pregnancy came less than two weeks after a government report found that the incidence of teen pregnancy was rising for the first time since 1991. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the 2006 teen birth rate was 41.9 births per 1,000 females aged 15- 19, compared to 40.5 births per 1,000 in 2005. It was the first increase in 15 years.

Meanwhile, the 19 years-old Casey Aldridge, could face some legal problems. In California where Jamie Lynn Spears tapes her TV show, it's a misdemeanor to have sex with someone younger than 18 if the offender is less than three years older.
"It states clearly in the Californian Penal Code that any person who engages in an act of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (under 18) who is not more than three years older or three years younger than the perpetrator, is guilty of a misdemeanor and faces up to one year in a county jail," said criminal defense attorney Jim Hammer for Fox News.
