Power Back on Grand Rapids Airport

A power outage which lasted almost 14 hours at an airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, ended on Monday.

Due to the lost of power some flights were delayed and left the passenger terminal with no heat.

According to airport spokesman Bruce Schedlbauer, Sunday around 8:45 the passenger terminal building from the Gerald R. Ford International Airport lost power and the outage continued Monday, the Associated Press informs.

The backup power was used until Monday at 10:30 a.m. when the power was restored.

CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary Consumers Energy provides the energy for the airport.

They’ve found that the cause for the outage was triggered by a piece of the utility’s equipment which had a problem.

Sunday flights were diverted from the airport. No specific figures about how many flights were delayed were given.

According to Schedlbauer when the power was down, the air field, control tower and communications, navigation and security systems had power. Still there was no heat in the building and there was little light in the terminal.

The bags which used to be screened by machines were screened by workers. Passengers had to use stairways to board planes instead of the mechanized bridges.

On December 14 another outage was caused by construction workers. They’ve damaged a power line while they were working at the parking ramp of the airport. According to airport officials, today’s outage wasn’t probably caused by workers since they were not there anymore.
