Apple Is Serious About The Movies

Every time an Apple’s event is closing in, the tech journalists are playing one of their favorites guessing games: what will Jobs have to say? What breathtaking device will he announce? Or will it be another technological breakthrough like when he announced that the Intel chips will power the Macs?

However, everyone seems to enjoy the game and this year the predictions are about the new movie deals for iTunes.

According to various reports, from BusinessWeek to Bloomberg, everyone is sure that at this year’s MacWorld Apple will unveil a new version of its larger-than-life iTunes store, that will provide to its customers movie downloads from Warner Bros. and Fox as suppliers.

Besides that, Apple will rent movies from Paramount, Walt Disney and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.

Bloomberg confirmed the prices announced earlier this week by BusinessWeek. Renting a movie from the new iTunes store will cost $3.99 for 24 hours, it has been said by the sources familiar with the deals signed by Apple and movie studios.

With all these new allies on board, is Apple set to revolutionize the movies world same way as it did with the music?

Hard to say! Selling movies is a completely different business and it requires another approach. With movies, it is not about only new releases or hot titles. Watching a movie requires a certain state-of-mind and 24 hours could be insufficient sometimes. There are also involved factors as the quality of the recording, the size of the file to download and the compatibility with various devices. Of course, Apple is better positioned than anyone else ion the race to conquer the digital movies world. It has a lot of experience as the company is already selling movies through its iTunes store.

Also, convincing the movie studios to join the Apple’s revolution will bring collateral advantages for the Cupertino company, one of them being to impose Apple TV as the preferred consumer device for watching movies on your TV.

The Apple-movie studios is a win-win alliance and in my opinion if Apple has indeed managed to convince the movie studios to sign the rumored distribution deal than on January 15 we will watch the dawn of a new era. An era in which the movie theater will be just on click away!
