Angry Judge Doubles OJ Simpson’s Bail

An outraged Las Vegas judge doubled O.J. Simpson’s bail to $250,000 on Wednesday and accused the former football player of "arrogance or ignorance" after he allegedly violated the terms of his original bail, by trying to contact a co-defendant in his armed robbery case through his bail bondsman.

Five days after being arrested for violating the terms of his bail, O.J. Simpson was brought to court in jail attire to answer the charges where Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass set bail at $250,000. She urged the disgraced football star, who famously acquitted of murdering his wife in 1995, to put his Florida home up as additional surety. She said he would not be released until she had legal papers confirming he had done so.

"How we came to be here today is mind boggling to this court," Glass said this morning.

"When bail was agreed upon by the parties it was a significantly lower amount than I expected to be given at that time. I expected Mr. Simpson would do what he had to do to post it and then go back to Florida. Then we have the complication of this phone call. I don't know Mr. Simpson what the heck you were thinking, or maybe that was just the problem. You weren't."

"I don't know if it's just arrogance. I don't know if it's ignorance. But you've been locked up at the Clark County Detention Center since Friday because of arrogance or ignorance - or both."

Once again, the judge strictly forbad Simpson from contacting the other co-defendants in the robbery case.

"No phone calls, no contact, nothing," she said. "Just go back to Florida after your bail is posted and come back here April 7 for your trial."

Simpson's attorney, Gabriel Grasso, filed a motion late Tuesday urging a judge to reject Clark County District Attorney David Roger's effort to have Simpson jailed without bail until his April 7 trial.

Prosecutors had asked that Simpson's bail be increased to $1 million or for him to remain behind bars until his trial, but another of his attorneys, Yale Galanter argued he was neither a danger to the community nor a flight risk, pointing out that Simpson "cannot even walk out of his front door without TV cameras following him."

The 60-year-old sports star-turned-actor, who was arrested in September for leading a sports memorabilia robbery from a Las Vegas casino hotel room, promised a judge he would not try to contact any of the people who were involved in the theft.

Simpson is charged along with Clarence Stewart and Charles Erlich with conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery and burglary and could face life in prison if convicted.

According to the district’s attorney, Simpson instructed his bail bondsman, Miguel Pereira, to tell co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart how upset Simpson was about testimony during their preliminary hearing.

In the latest turn of events, Pereira said he never imagined his role as a bail bondsman would turn into a somewhat of a personal assistant to Simpson, so he quit being Simpson’s bondsman.
