The Japanese fans of PSP won’t get their hands on the Skype version
of Sony’s gaming handheld this month. Less than 24 hours before the official
launch, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan decided to postpone the event due to
some problems with the two microphone products for PSP, SINGLE PACK (with one
microphone, PSPJ-15010) and TWIN PACK (with two microphones, PSPJ-15011).
Sony said that the microphones did not meet the Skype
specifications in part to obtain certification. Though, the European launch of the new PSP Skype-enabled won’t
be affected by this problem.
Sony announced in early January that its Play Station
Portable (PSP)-2000 series game console will enable the use of Skype software
program. In order to use Skype, the PSP users still need a Memory Stick Duo, a
wireless Internet connection and an audio input device compatible with Skype.
Sony announced the following features of Skype on PSP-2000:
free web-based phone calls with other Skype users, the ability to change old or
add new contacts, SkypeOut (which enables both local and long distance calls
and international phones and cell phones directly from PSP by purchasing Skype
credit) and optional SkypeIn number, which enables users to receive calls on
Skype from landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world (also through purchasing
Skype credit).
