Former Indonesian President Suharto Dies At 86

The former Indonesian President Suharto died today at the Jakarta Pertamina Hospital. Suharto, who ruled Indonesia, for 32 years, was 86 years old. His doctor announced the death of the former Indonesian leader.

"Bapak (Father) Muhamad Suharto, on Sunday, January 27, 2008, at about 1:10 pm (0610 GMT) died at Pertamina Hospital in Jakarta," announced.

Indonesian current President, usilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his personal sympathy and that of the government and all its citizens.

"I invite all the people of Indonesia to pray that the deceased's good deeds and dedication to the nation may be accepted by Allah the almighty. And to the family who are left behind, may Allah give them strength to face this trial. Pak (Father) Suharto has done a great service to the nation."

"We, the whole family, thank everyone who has prayed for our father," said Suharto's eldest daughter Siti Hadijanti Rukmana, also known as Tutut.

The government announced a national week of mourning and called for a seven-day hoisting of the red-and-white national flag at half mast.

The former President has been admitted to Jakarta Pertamina Hospital on January 4. On January 11 he suffered an organ failure and had to be put on a ventilator. The team of medics has been on high alert ever since despite the slight signs of improvements, as his condition could degenerate at any moment.

Suharto, born June 8, 1921, was the President of Indonesia for 32 years, from 1967 to 1998. He established the New Order Regime, managing to receive diplomatic and economic support from several Western Governments due to his anti-Communist beliefs.

But the last 8 years turned him from the man who brought economic growth and industrialization to the authoritative man who supported corruption and whose outside diplomatic support had been withdrawn. He was forced to resign in May 1998, after three decades of indisputable authority.
