TV's Dr. Phil McGraw does not know when to keep quiet; Thursday, as a guest on “The View,” he once again tried to polish his image by talking about the help Britney Spears needs and the good intentions he has.
Dr. Phil drew some heavy criticism after his self-publicized visit to Britney Spears in the hospital in early January. He apologized once, on his own show, and now he is talking about what happened more than three weeks ago again – this time with the ladies on “The View.”
He once again said he was sorry about the statement he released and emphasized that he would not follow that same route now; he insisted that he only visited Britney at the request of her family; and that she needs help.
He said he was contacted by the Spears family and that, in an effort to offer his help and support, he went to see Britney in the hospital. He explained that, at the time, he hoped to see Britney and “start a low-key dialogue that might make her open to seeking help.”
“If that starts [her] on the road to intervention, then that is a good thing,” he said, without mentioning the episode he had been planning to do shortly after the visit, dedicated to Britney’s problems.
(The show was quickly canceled, with McGraw explaining that the situation was “too intense” and citing his “consideration” for the family.)
Britney would not hand over her two young sons to ex-hubby Kevin Federline at the scheduled time on Jan. 3 and the chaotic day ended with the singer being taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in an ambulance, closely trailed by paparazzi.
She was placed on emergency hold and was expected to spend 72 hours at the medical facility under psychiatric evaluation but she left Cedars-Sinai considerably earlier.
Dr. Phil released a statement after he saw her, saying she “is in dire need of both medical and psychological help” and extolling his own expert knowledge. Another statement soon followed, this time from a representative of the Spears family, who said the TV shrink had violated their trust by discussing Britney’s condition with the press.
While talking to Walters Co., McGraw reiterated ideas he presented earlier this month on his own talk show, mainly that as a television celebrity he is an easy target for undeserved criticism and rumors, denying that he is in trouble with the California Board of Psychology for practicing without a license.
Britney was transported to UCLA Medical Center Thursday, for a second 72-hour emergency hold.
