Over 1,000 people gathered on
Saturday to remember Tevin Park-Flowers, a seven-year-old boy who was found unconscious
hanging from a hook in the school’s bathroom and died two days later, on February
1st, of cardiac arrest.
The mourning took place at Mount
Zion Baptist Church, where family, friends and colleagues came to say goodbye
from Tevin, after his tragic and mysterious death shocked the entire community.
Tevin was a member of the
football team and in his memory, Leo Dawson, who represented the team, said his
jersey will be retired, and moreover, an academic award program will be given
his name from now on.
“We’re going to retire his
number. All the players here at Delwood will wear his number on their shoulder
and their helmet,” said Leo Dawson, president of the Delwood Northeast Optimist
Football League, kbmt12.com reported.
Football teams all across the
state have sent their condolences, and all his friends said they will miss him
terribly. The school principal said the school won’t be the same without Tevin.
Police and school investigators
are still trying to figure out what happened at the scene. A spokesperson for
the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services also said that they were
getting involved in the investigation, for as long as there will be suspicions
of abuse of school neglect.
Investigators still don’t know
how the seven-year-old got suspended from that hook. Following the incident,
the school officials said they’ve removed the hooks from the restrooms. Unfortunately,
that came too late for little Tevin.
As the investigation continues,
most people say Tevin couldn’t have ended up hanging from that hook on his own,
but if this was either an unfortunate bad joke or an intentional homicide,
police will have to give the verdict.
