Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was deeply offended by a comment belonging to an MSNBC anchor about her daughter Chelsea. The offense was referring to Chelsea’s role in her mother’s campaign.

“Doesn’t seem like Chelsea’s sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way” MSNBC anchor David Shuster said Thursday during an on-air discussion, referring to the fact that she was making calls to voters and giving speeches advocating for her mother.

Howard Wolfson, Clinton’s communications director called the comment “beneath contempt” on Friday, the Los Angeles reported.
Moreover, Clinton held a news conference on Saturday at the University of Maine where she made references to the incident.

“I am a mom first and a candidate second and I found the remarks incredibly offensive. I have sent a letter to the head of NBC expressing the deep offense that I took,” she said quoted by Reuters.

Meanwhile, NBC News announced Friday that Shuster had been suspended indefinitely over the remark, which a release called “irresponsible and inappropriate.”

“NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks,” MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.

Shuster himself apologized for the comment he made and told the Associated Press that he had tried to reach Sen. Clinton to apologize personally.

"All Americans should be proud of Chelsea Clinton. And I am particularly sorry that my language diminished the respect and regard she has earned from all of us and the respect her parents deserve in how they raised her,” Shuster said.

He also apologized on the MSNBC show “Tucker,” where he had uttered his comment while acting as guest host.

Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama are scheduled to participate in an MSNBC debate on Feb. 26 from Ohio, which holds its primary March 4. Asked whether she would participate in the debate after this incident, Clinton said that she was going to wait and see “how this plays out.”

NBC News said in a statement that it was trying to keep the debate alive.

“Our conversations with the Clinton campaign about their participation continue today, and we are hopeful that the event will take place as planned,” the statement said, according to The Times.
