Former police officer Bobby
Cutts Jr. admitted to killing his pregnant girlfriend, Jessie Davis, during the
Monday testimony, but said it was an accident and killing her was not his
intention. As it appears, Davis refused to let the suspect out of the house,
and that is when he hit her in the throat with his elbow, harder than he
thought, Cutts says.
Cutts, 30, who was a patrolman
in Canton, Ohio, pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated murder, but if he
is to be found guilty, he could get death penalty. In a tearful testimony,
Cutts explained how he did not mean to hurt her, but when he went by her house
to pick up his 2 1/2-year-old son, the woman failed to get the boy ready in
time, and while trying to stop him from leaving, she grabbed his arm, which
threw his elbow back and that is when he hit her, accidentally, Cutts told the
jurors.
The story goes on, as Cutts
panicked, as he says, and after unsuccessfully trying to revive the woman, he
took her body away from the house, so as for Blake not to see her, and dumped
her 20 miles away in a Summit County park. When asked why he didn’t call the
police to report the incident, Cutts says he couldn’t get the phone to work.
Hard to believe he had to search
for more than a week for a cell phone to be able to reach the police, but Cutts
says he knew nobody will believe his side of the story. Prosecutors however
said that the former patrolman was feeling the pressure of a crumbling marriage
and economic debts, and that it would take a lot less than DNA evidence to
prove his guilt.
Davis, was nearly full term pregnant
at the time of the incident, June 14 last year. Her body was discovered nine
days later, after Cutts led the police investigators to her body. The 2-hour emotional
testimony did not impress the prosecutors, who had serious doubts about his
display of emotions and his sincerity. The final arguments in the case are
scheduled for Tuesday.
