The mother of British singer Amy Winehouse, Janis, who not that long ago wrote an open letter to her daughter begging her to seek help for her addiction problems, believes the singer is "on the road to recovery."
Following Winehouse’s outstanding performance at the Grammys on Sunday, Janis spoke to Britain’s GMTV about the changes in her daughter’s life.
"Well, as you saw, she looks good and it's a case of she's on the road — and that's what it's about — she's on the road to recovery," she said on the morning show, "and that's what it's all about."
"We all felt, the family, well everyone that saw her felt that's the best she's performed, definitely," said her mother.
Amy, who won five Grammy awards this weekend, performed live via satellite from London, after she was initially denied a US visa for the occasion. According to Janis, her daughter’s decision to stick to the plan, and not fly to Los Angeles for the ceremony the last minute, was for the best.
"I think it would have been too much for her because all of the traveling and flying there," she said. "I mean seeing what the Grammys were like, I thought if Amy were there, she'd be a little girl lost in it."
"Amy is...there's no sort of double standards. What you see is how she is. She's a very, very genuine and sincere girl."
Then again, observed the mother, "It was a case of Amy couldn't get to L.A., and my feeling was L.A. came to Amy."
Last month, the 24-year-old singer finally checked into rehab shortly after a video showing her smoking crack surfaced online, raising serious concerns for her life.
"She was sort of with it but not with it. She's got a solid family and we're all there for her," Janis said.
"I was helpless because there was nothing I could do. Amy had to do it for Amy and that's the way it is."
