Duct-Tapping A Student Gets Teacher Suspended

A Duval County middle school teacher got suspended ten days without pay after she was accused of duct taping a student to his desk.

On Tuesday the Duval County School Board took the decision to suspend Kasey Goodin for ten days after the alleged incident.

This decision came after the board heard the teacher’s version on the incident which occurred at the Kirby-Smith Middle School.

Goodin said that the incident was a joke, but the board didn’t saw it like that.

School board chair Betty Burney said: “It's just not funny for a child to be taped, whether it's in jest or it's a disciplinary measure,” Local6.com reports.

Goodin described in written the accident saying: "There was a light-hearted mood in the class as I walked to the supply closet and removed a roll of purple duct tape and a roll of masking tape … The class was laughing. I was laughing. The student was laughing."

Apparently the teacher took the duct tape and tapped the student from his legs to the desk after using the masking tape to tape his hands and his face.

The statement written by the teacher said: "The masking tape was applied to the student's hands. The student immediately removed it, laughing throughout the incident. Within the next few minutes, the 'play' was over, the tape was removed,"

In the end she wrote: “This incident, was in reality, an opportunity to have fun with the students while getting a message to them. Looking back, I know that it was inappropriate for me to break the lines of formality.”

The student who was involved in the incident was taken out of Goodin’s classroom.

Duval County Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals explained why they didn’t use more severe measures like dismissal. "The reason why we didn't go for something as severe as dismissal, it did appear at least it started out as something more lighthearted," he said.

“I understand that it was a young teacher. I just felt that we needed to send a stronger message," he added.

Burney was the one who voted against the teacher’s suspension.
