Mothers are the best, always rooting for you and always there to pick you up when you are slipping, and Amy Winehouse’s mom is no different – she confidently told British television morning show GMTV Tuesday that her girl “is on the road to recovery.”
Janis Winehouse, the very proud and for a long time until recently, very worried, mother of British singer Amy Winehouse, appeared on GMTV Tuesday morning sounding more hopeful than she has in a long time.
Winehouse’s drug problems have long been tabloid fodder and her entering a rehabilitation facility last month has given her mom new hope.
“She's on the road and that's what it's about,” Janis said during a taped interview from inside her London home. “She's on the road to recovery.”
Janis explained that being denied a visa, not being able to tour were like wake up calls for the singer, who finally realized she needed professional help in order to go on with her life.
The mother was also relieved that Winehouse’s triumph at the Grammys on Sunday became a strong motivation for her to strive and get better. “It was a case of, Amy couldn't get to L.A., and my feeling was, L.A. came to Amy,” she said.
The 24-year-old originally intended to fly over the Atlantic and attend the Grammy Awards ceremony in LA. To that end, she left her clinic last Monday in order to apply for a visa at the US embassy; she received it too late to be able to make the trip.
Winehouse checked into North London's Capio Nightingale hospital at the end of January, after a gloomy video allegedly showing her smoke from a crack-cocaine pipe was made public.
The treatment she has been receiving at the clinic seems to have been beneficial for the singer, who lately had been displaying a very bony frame and sickish pale skin. During her performance via satellite for the Grammys, the songstress looked healthy, in good spirits and better than ever.
Mama Winehouse added Tuesday that it was all for the best that her daughter did not go to the US. “Seeing what the Grammys were like, I thought if Amy were there, she'd be a little girl lost in it,” she said with typical motherly care.
Amy Winehouse received five golden statuettes at the 50th Grammy Awards ceremony, including for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.
