The GTA IV maker, Rockstar, decided to clarify a misunderstanding
about the multiplayer support in the upcoming game.
Earlier this week in a Major Nelson podcast, Microsoft's
senior VP of Interactive Entertainment, Don Mattrick, stated the multiplayer support
in Grand Theft Auto IV will be exclusive to Microsoft’s gaming console, Xbox
360.
"It's an amazing piece of software, and I'm really
excited with its downloadable content and online multiplayer support - again,
that's something that's unique to 360," Mattrick said.
“Again, that’s something that’s unique to 360. We think
consumers are going to love that and it’s going to create, what I would
describe again, as the premium experience on our platform,” he added.
Don Mattrick, a former president at Electronic Arts Worldwide
joined Microsoft in July last year as the Senior Vice President of Interactive
Entertainment Business replacing former executive corporate vice president
Peter Moore.
Anyway, a Rockstar spokesperson confirmed for
GamesIndustry.biz that both versions of GTA IV, for Xbox 360 and for
PlayStation 3, would support online multiplayer capabilities. However, Rockstar
has not released any details about the multiplayer support.
In 2006, Microsoft and Rockstar Games announced a strategic
alliance to provide exclusive episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox
Live. Securing exclusive deals with the gaming companies could be
the next battlefield in the gaming consoles war during this year.
Last month Rockstar said Grand Theft Auto IV will hit the
store shelves on April 29.
