The Colorado woman who killed a love rival has been sentenced to life in prison without the right to parole. Shawna Nelson executed the wife of her on and off lover on Jan. 23, 2007.

Nelson was a Weld County sheriff's dispatcher at the time of the murder and she had a long relationship with Ignacio Garraus, a Greeley police officer. The two had a child together but he dumped her just a month before his wife, Heather, was killed.

Shawna Nelson dressed in black and put on a black mask and confronted Heather Garraus in a parking lot. Nelson ordered her victim to kneel and shot her twice in the head. The shooter's husband, Ken Nelson, was also working in law enforcement. The Weld County sheriff's deputy has been charged with evidence tampering. He is thought to have handled the gun that was used to kill Heather Garraus.

"You killed Heather Garraus. You carried this out with great planning and deliberation," said Judge Roger Klien, according to the Denver Post. "You deserve to serve every day of the sentence I will impose," he continued.

"We are glad it's over. (The jury) did the right thing," said a friend of the victim to reporters at the courthouse.

Prosecutor Cliff Reidel declared that he did not seek the death penalty for Shawna Nelson because doing so would have required he show aggravating factors. "The Greeley Police Department did a hell of a job in this investigation," Reidel said, according to The Coloradoan.
