Seinfeld Unscathed after Car Wreck

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld was this close to death Saturday evening, when the brakes on his vintage car failed and the vehicle turned over – but the actor walked away in one piece and still managed to crack a joke.

Jerry Seinfeld was driving his vintage Fiat in the Hamptons Saturday evening when the car’s brakes malfunctioned, East Hampton Town Police Chief Todd Sarris told the New York Post.

Seinfeld was alone in the 1967 Fiat BTM, driving north toward Montauk Highway, when the malfunction occurred. He tried the emergency brake and when that failed as well, he swerved in order to keep the vehicle from driving straight into an intersection.

The accident happened on Skimhampton Road in East Hampton, said Sarris. The 53-year-old’s car rolled onto the passenger side, then the roof, and finally came to rest on the driver’s side, per the NY Post.

“His actions probably avoided a very serious accident,” Sarris said. “I think he was a little shaken up, with justification.”

What is most amazing in this story is that the comedian walked away safe and sound – not a wound, not a bruise, not a scratch. He required no medical attention whatsoever.

“He was a little shocked when he walked in and it started to dawn on him what happened,” his wife, Jessica, told the Post. “It could have been a lot worse, obviously, and thank God it wasn’t. He’s fine.”

Not only was Seinfeld fine, he was also still in a humorous disposition.

“Because I know there are kids out there, I want to make sure they all know that driving without braking is not something I recommend, unless you have professional clown training or a comedy background, as I do. It is not something I plan to make a habit of.”

Sarris added that the actor had not been drinking. The accident was ascribed to mechanical failure.
