Yahoo Gives Green Light To Video Sharing On Flickr

Yahoo unveiled on Tuesday that the popular online photo-sharing website Flickr will now have a brand new feature, highly expected and anticipated by the fast growing community: online video sharing. The website, which is a member of Yahoo Inc., has over 42 million monthly visitors and more than 2 billion photos stored and with the new feature is trying to enhance the sharing experience, by making Yahoo “the leading start point on the Web,” as Yahoo said.

Kakul Srivastava, general manager of Flickr at Yahoo said about the announcement: “Video on Flickr is an extension of what Flickr is already doing with more than 2 billion photos stored worldwide – providing a place where people capture and share life’s daily moments.”

In a world where digital media is essentially part of our lives, and almost every device, whether it is a mobile phone or a digital camera, offers the possibility to capture short clips, which people want to share. This “has led to a new behavior emerging in the market,” said Srivastava, adding that “there is a great resonance between this new category of content and with the kind of authentic, personal moments already being shared on Flickr.”

According to a study made by Yahoo, users aged 18 to 44 are likely to capture videos with their digital cameras, but they also need an efficient way to share them, which is exactly how the video sharing feature of Flickr emerged.

“Video on Flickr gives members a glimpse into daily and extraordinary activities,” the company said, adding that users can now share videos the same way they share photos, and at the same time set privacy settings for friends, family or other users in the Flickr community. With the help of team and community review and automated abuse-spotting mechanisms, video sharing on Flickr should meet the demands of the community.
