“High School Musical 3” is still months away from being released but the Disney Channel is already busy developing “High School Musical 4,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“We are writing ‘High School Musical 4,’” Disney Channel Worldwide president Rich Ross said Tuesday after a presentation at a midtown Manhattan recording studio, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The fourth installment is reportedly likely to be a TV movie, unlike “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” though that could change.
Whether the cast will reunite for HSM4 has not been confirmed yet, but characters introduced in the third installment will probably return.
“Are we going to have all the cast back? Probably not,” Ross said. “Will we have some of them? I hope so.”
The teenagers that became famous with HSM1 - Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman – all returned for “Senior Year,” it was confirmed in January of this year.
The first two movies recorded a gigantic number of viewers when they aired on the Disney Channel. The first HSM had 250 million viewers since its debut in 2006 and the second movie premiered before the eyes of 18.6 million viewers, the biggest audience ever for a cable telecast, per the Disney Channel.
Filming for HSM 3 begins in two weeks in Utah. It will be released on October 24. The film will focus on Troy (Efron) and Gabriella (Hudgens), who are faced with the possibility of their romance withering away as they head off to different colleges.
Along with the other Wildcats, they will plan a musical that will reflect their experiences, hopes and fears regarding their future.
Kenny Ortega directs the third installment, as he did the first two, from a script by Peter Barsocchini.
