American Idol Loses Audience, but Archuleta Charms Viewers

After American Idol’s Inspirational Night quite disappointed everybody, it’s no surprise the show lost around 6 million viewers, as Reuters reports.

Still, “Idol” led the night shows in terms of numbers, with around 24 million viewers.

So, we have eight performers of which most either make a wrong musical choice, or transform a good song into a boring or corny tune.

A good choice was made by David Archuleta, who apparently managed to charm the show’s viewers with his performance of Robbie Williams’ “Angels.”

According to a survey by E-Poll Market Research on behalf of Reuters, asking “American Idol” fans to vote the likely winner, 40 percent of the voters chose the 17-year-old Archuleta. But, when asked who the most talented contestant was, “Idol” fans answered differently. The baby-faced boy was beaten by rocker David Cook, with 31 percent to Archuleta’s 27. Carly Smithson came third, followed by Brooke White, Michael Johns, Jason Castro and Kristy Lee Cook. Syesha Mercado occupied, as expected, the last place.

Syesha actually did one of the biggest mistakes of the night, choosing to sing a song performed by the show’s previous winner Fantasia – “I Believe.” Unfortunately for her, Syesha somehow forced the judges to compare her to Fantasia, who did a great job singing Whitney Houston’s song, unlike Mercado’s feeble attempt. Fantasia’s performance was warm, sincere and credible, while Syesha seems to be afraid of revealing her real self.

Michael Johns also had an unsuccessful rocker-wannabe attempt, performing Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

David Cook dropped his usual rocker attitude for a corny one, flashing his palm, on which he had written “Give Back,” to the camera.

Brooke White managed to destroy Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” while Carly Smithson sang a much uninspired, aggressive version of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On.”

Jason Castro made a good choice with Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s version of “Over the Rainbow,” which he performed complete with ukulele.

Kristy Lee Cook was also appreciated by the judges after singing Martina McBride’s song “Anyway.” She was even told by Cowell she looked like a star.

Returning to Reuters’ poll, the fans also had the occasion to “judge” the judges, and the results were quite surprising. Although the majority of the voters classified Simon Cowell as “rude,” 64 percent of them picked him as their favorite judge. The other two judges, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul each received around 17 percent of the remaining votes.
