Rapper Vanilla Ice, real name Robert Van Winkle, was
arrested Thursday night for domestic battery and booked into the Palm Beach
County Jail, according to Palm Beach
County, Fla.,
sheriffs.
TMZ.com was first to report the arrest of the 40-year-old
rapper on Thursday night.
Van Winkle was booked by Palm Beach County Sheriff's
deputies at 10:43 PM ET on a charge of domestic battery. Police officers
arrived at his Wellington
home after his wife Laura Van Winkle called deputies to say her husband was
hitting and kicking her, according to the Palm Beach Post.
When police arrived, Laura said she and her husband had had
an argument and he pushed her. She refused to provide further details without
the presence of her lawyer. The woman appeared unhurt, reports the Post.
Van Winkle told police they were having an argument and
blamed the episode on Laura being bipolar. He said his wife takes medication
but still has irrational and argumentative episodes.
He denied pushing his wife, the Post reports citing the
arrest report.
The couple has two children, aged 8 and 10.
Van Winkle is currently in police custody and is due to
appear in court.
The singer previously spent one night in jail in 2001 and
was placed on one year's probation pleading no contest to domestic violence in Broward County. Other brushes with the law
include driving infractions - driving with an expired license, driving 74 mph
in a 45 mph zone and having illegally tinted car windows.
The Post adds that in 2004, Van Winkle paid $220 in
impounding fees when his pet wallaroo and goat escaped in Port St. Lucie and
were picked up by animal control officers.
As Vanilla Ice, he is known for the 1990 hit “Ice, Ice
Baby,” which sold 15 million.
Van Winkle is currently working on an album, in between
concerts, according to his official website.
