Lonelygirl15 Creators Get $5 Million Boost For EQAL

Lonelygirl15 and KateModern creators Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried got a $5 million boost from Spark Capital to create their own “social entertainment” production company called “EQAL.” The two stated in the company’s blog that despite all the opportunities they had after the success of Lonelygirl15, they wanted to stay true to the ideas that inspired them to create Lonelygirl15 in the first place and create “new forms of entertainment.”

“It’s an exciting time for online entertainment,” Becket and Goodfried said in the blog. “There are a slew of independent producers, digital studios, and social media companies sprouting up, not to mention the fact that traditional media isn’t exactly ignoring this whole “internets” thing. We’ve always wanted to stay independent and produce interactive shows that we could put our hearts and souls into, and sometime last fall we realized that raising money would give us the ability to remain independent and produce amazing shows on our terms.”

The two productions, Lonelygirl15 and KateModern have both been nominated for the 2007 Webby Awards, so everyone is curious to see what Becket and Goodfried can do with the new production company.

After almost two years of working hard at producing Lonelygirl15 and KateModern, and figuring out the business model to go with today’s trends, the two producers said: “After six months of fast food and airplane delays, we found a VC that shared our vision to build a company that would produce truly interactive shows.”

Lonelygirl15 created a whole fan-mania around Bree, the teenager who convinced most YouTube and MySpace viewers that she was as real as can get. It wasn’t until September 2006 that the fans found out that Bree was actually played by a 19-year-old actress from New Zealand named Jessica Rose.
