“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” Ranks Second In Friday's Box Office

The kung fu movie that reunites Jackie Chan and Jet Li, “The Forbidden Kingdom” outsold the romantic comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” in Friday’s box office.

“The Forbidden Kingdom” depicts the story of Jason Tripitikas a Boston average teenager whose passion is kung-fu movies, but soon he will find himself caught in a fantasy world where his mission will be to end the hundreds of years-long tyranny of ruthless Jade Warlord and to liberate Monkey King  from imprisonment.

The movie, produced by Lionsgate, premiered in 3,151 theaters and has gathered $7,550,000 in ticket sales.

Directed by debutant Nicholas Stoller, produced by Universal and based on the script written by Jason Segel (household names of “Freaks and Geeks”), “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” talks about humiliation and depicts love from the vantage point of the insecure male. The movie earned $5,920,000 so far.

On the third place, we have “Prom Night”, the remake of the ‘80s horror classic and the last weekend winner at box office.  In this remake, Brittany Snow is Donna (in the original movie the role was played by Jamie Lee Curtis), a high-school senior. She is the sole survivor of a stalker who killed her family three years earlier and who has returned to finish his job. The movie earned $3,450,000 and it has reached a total of $26,914,000.

“88 Minutes”, the long awaited movie in which Al Pacino portrays Dr. Jack Gramm, a prosperous looking Seattle university professor and forensics expert, who is threatened to be killed in 88 minutes, ranked fourth with $2,325,000.

On the fifth place with $1,800,000 we find “21”, the movie in which Kevin Spacey plays the role of Micky Rosa, an MIT math professor who gathers a group of students teaching them how to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor.

The fantasy movie with Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin, “Nim’s Island” ranked sixth with $1,500,000, closely followed by “Street Kings”, which earned $1,300,000.

The Top 10 included also the documentary movie “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” with $1,200,000, “Horton Hears A Who” and “Leatherheads”, both movies earning $925,000.
