Bloody Weekend in Chicago

Violence occurred in Chicago during the weekend, with at least 32 people shot, out of which six were killed.

Police blamed the large number of gangs and guns for the sad events that took place in the city.

"There are just too many weapons here," Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis said at a news conference. "Too many guns, too many gangs."

"We've got to get children back into being children," Weis added. "Not cold-blooded killers. Law enforcement cannot replace parents. Parents have to take a very aggressive role."

Shortly after Weis made his statements, three more shootings were reported on the West Side, leaving two more people dead and four people wounded.

Police said at least 14 of the total number of shootings were gang related. The victims were aged from 13 to 65.

According to the New York Times, police statistics show that, the same weekend last year, 19 shootings occurred, killing 4 people, while 21 people were also killed in 2006, in the same period.

Another factor encouraging shootings is the warm weather, which makes people go out more.

"Crime breeds with warm weather. More people are outside. It's just a given we're going to see a little bit more activity," said Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Bond urged people to call the police as soon as they find out information about gangs or suspicious activities in their area.

"What neighbors can do is they have info about gangs or other suspicious activities or people with guns, they should call 911, call the police," Bond said.

Ironically, on Saturday, the police department released statistics showing that the city’s murder rate had decreased with about 1 percent in March, compared to last year’s month of March.
