Miami Metrorail Closed after Man Jumped on Tracks

Authorities reported a man jumped off a platform and in front of an approaching train at the Miami Metrorail transit system Wednesday.

The man survived, as the impact pushed him between the rail cars and a wall below the platform, but he remained pinned under the train.

The Miami fire rescue team acted quickly, freeing the 19-year-old man from underneath the train.

Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll said the young man showed no life threatening injuries, but he had severely hurt his right arm and broke both his legs.

After the rescue, the man was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His identity has not yet been revealed.

People who witnessed the accident said the man was behaving normally in the station, and then he suddenly walked over to the platform’s edge, made sure the train was coming and jumped in front of it. He was apparently traveling alone.

The train stopped at a station in Coral Gables, a Miami suburb.

While police were investigating the case, the rail station was closed and buses were used to take travelers between the University and Brickell Avenue stations. The rest of the Metrorail system worked as usual.
