Facebook Gets A New Face

Just one day away from MySpace’s announcement about its profiles’ export, social network Facebook reported that a similar feature will be available on the web site over the next few weeks and it shall be launched under the name Facebook Connect.

The main differance between the two offers is that while MySpace will open the offer to a select group of sites, Facebook will allow the move of personal profiles to any web site willing to host them.

The new profile option was presented by Facebook’s senior platform manager Dave Morin in a post on the web site’s developer blog.

Facebook users will be able to use their profile content on other social sites, exporting their photos, names, friends, events, groups and other information. Another new add-on announced that web sites will be able to let users log in and create accounts with their Facebook names and passwords.

"These are just a few steps Facebook is taking to make the vision of data portability a reality for users worldwide," Dave Morin explained in his blog post. "We believe the next evolution of data portability is about much more than data. It's about giving users the ability to take their identity and friends with them around the Web, while being able to trust that their information is always up to date and always protected by their privacy settings."

The list of web sites which will connect with Facebook has not yet been published but there are many companies interested in the collaboration.

Facebook, with its 70 million user-base decided to act on MySpace’s strategy and the outcome will be visible over the next few months, once both sites officially launch their new features.
