Uma Thurman Sues Lancôme

Actress Uma Thurman is suing French cosmetics firm Lancôme for $15 million over the use of her name and face in advertising campaigns, BBC News reports. Thurman’s legal action follows Lancôme’s on Wednesday in Manhattan.

The starlet stated in her lawsuit that Lancôme Parfums et Beaute & Cie boosted its worldwide sales and enhanced its “prestige, stature and bargaining power” by helping retailers and others use her name and likeness in advertising and promotions after her contract expired. According to Thurman, the company gave the “false impression” she was still linked to Lancôme.

However, the firm denied breach of contract and asked the judge to dismiss Thurman’s original claim. Thurman’s attorney, Bertram Fields, named Lancôme’s state lawsuit “a pre-emptive blow.”

“Celebrities will now be careful about doing deals with Lancôme,” Fields told Reuters. “They continued to use her photographs long after the contract was over,” he added.

Meanwhile, the company claims their contract with the “Kill Bill” star stated it was not responsible if third parties used Thurman’s name and face after it ended. Lancôme’s lawyer, Peter D Raymond, declared his client “couldn't control everybody out in the world.”

“I’m delighted that the case will go before a jury. They got an enormous benefit throughout the world after the contract was over, and $1m million doesn't begin to do it,” Fields said, quoted by BBC.

Uma Thurman had a busy week in Manhattan courts, as on Wednesday, 37-year-old Jack Jordan was convicted in the state court’s criminal branch of stalking and harassing the U.S. actress.
