'Heroes' Star George Takei To Marry Longtime Partner Brad Altman

Following California's Supreme Court ruling allowing gay marriage under the state's constitution, actor George Takei announced he and Brad Altman are ready to tie the knot after a 21-year relationship.

"Our California dream is reality," Takei, known for his roles as Sulu in the 1960s "Star Trek" as well as on NBC's "Heroes," said in a statement posted on his website. "Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!"

The announcement comes just days after California became the second state to permit same-sex marriages in a decision that invalidates virtually any law that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation. The 4-3 ruling means that same-sex couples will be able to obtain licenses to marry throughout California when the ruling becomes effective on June 16.

"Brad and I have shared our lives together for over 21 years. We’ve worked in partnership; he manages the business side of my career and I do the performing," the 71-year-old actor continued, praising his partner with whom he "shared good times" as well struggles thorough "the bad."

"He is my love and I can’t imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily," added Takei who came out three years ago.

Last Friday, another celebrity gay couple, comedienne Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia de Rossi, revealed their intentions of getting married now that same-sex marriage is legal in California.
