The Boston Celtics finished their series with the Detroit Pistons and will now join the Los Angeles Lakers in the highly anticipated finals of the National Basketball Association’s 07-08 season.
The Celtics managed to defeat the Pistons on their own court with a 89 – 81 final score, ending the series 4 – 2 and heading for the Main Event for the first time in the past 21 years. Also, the joy is even greater as in the past two seasons, Boston didn’t even make it into the play-offs.
Paul Pierce was the team’s top scorer and rebounder with 27 points and 8 boards, Ray Allen also had a good game with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Kevin Garnett added 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and Rajon Rondo scored 11 points.
Paul Pierce was quoted by BBCNews saying after the game: "The crazy thing is I grew up watching the Boston against Los Angeles Lakers playoff series. As a kid I hated the Celtics. That's what got me into basketball and now I am going to be part of basketball history."
For the Pistons, the most determined player was Chauncey Billups, who finished with the game-high of 29 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Richard Hamilton had 21 points, Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell and Antonio McDyess wern’t on their best night, coming together for 23 points.
Ever since the conference finals started, numerous NBA fans (except maybe the fans from Detroit and San Antonio) wished for a match-up between the two franchises which have won together 30 championships out of the league’s 61 seasons.
“It’s gonna be fantastic,” Boston Coach Doc Rivers said about the upcoming NBA Finals, according to the New York Times.
The first game is set for Tuesday night and will take place in Boston.
