It looks like women had their say over this weekend’s
box-office revenues. The four independent ladies, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte
and Miranda, marked the end of Indy’s reign at the box office. “Sex and the
City”, the movie inspired by the HBO TV show, has outsold "Indiana Jones
and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" by almost $10 million, unearthing
about $56 million, compared to Indy’s mere $46 million.
The figure surprised everybody, since the R rating made experts think that the movie
would have a box-office debut of about $30 million. But women all over the US
decided to show that the predictions were wrong, and invaded movie theatres,
some of them dressed as the main characters of the movie. Men came to see the
film also, but about 75 percent of the audience was formed by ladies.
Another box-office surprise is “The Strangers”. The movie in which Liv Tyler
and Scott Speedman play a young couple that finds itself in a situation where
it has to be capable of doing anything in order to survive a violent attack at
a vacation house, has made more than $20 million and ranks third this weekend.
”Iron Man” hangs in the top on fourth place even after a month since its
release. The movie made $14 million this weekend and $276 million since it was
first screened, making it the best sold film of this summer so far. However, it
will be interesting to see how much longer it will be able to hold its leading
position in the box-office tops, since Indy is coming fast from behind, earning
$217 million in less than two weeks.
