Johnny Depp Amuses, Frightens Two MTV Movie Awards His Way

Johnny Depp was the embodiment of versatility at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, receiving two golden popcorn trophies for making viewers laugh at Captain Jack Sparrow’s wily ways and shrink with fear at his bloody handiwork in two critically acclaimed 2007 films.

Johnny Depp was the only multiple winner Sunday night at the 17th annual MTV Movie Awards, picking up the trademark buckets of popcorn for his turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” voted by the fans the year’s Best Comedic Performance, and for his portrayal of the blood-thirsty barber in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” declared Best Villain.

Modest as usual, Depp thanked the fans warmly and insisted, upon receiving the first award, “I’m not really sure how this happened because you can ask anybody—I’m not a very funny person. I’m not even remotely funny.”

Also competing for best comedic performance were Jonah Hill (“Superbad”), Adam Sandler (“I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry”), Seth Rogen (“Knocked Up”) and Amy Adams (“Enchanted”).

Potential best villains were Angelina Jolie (“Beowulf”), Topher Grace (“Spider-Man 3”), Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”), and Denzel Washington (“American Gangster”).

Picking up his second MTV award of the night, for his Academy Award nominated work, Depp thanked fans for “sticking with me on this very obtuse and strange road.”

Adam Sandler meanwhile consoled himself with the MTV Generation Award, handed to him by Hollywood star Tom Cruise, who paid him a lengthy and humorous tribute. Sandler in turn regaled the crowd with his own rendition of Carly Simon’s classic “Nobody Does It Better,” with a personal cheeky touch in the chorus: “Baby, I’m the best.”

“Juno” and “Superbad” lost in the Best Movie category to “Transformers,” with star Megan Fox promising fans the sequel would be "f-----g bada--.” Director Michael Bay said he would start shooting a sequel to the hit action movie on Monday.

Charlize Theron, Will Smith and Jason Bateman (who costar in the upcoming film “Hancock”) handed out the award for Best Female Performance to Ellen Page for “Juno.” Smith returned to the stage later to pick up his own popcorn trophy, voted by the fans the year’s Best Male Performance.

Seth Rogen and his “Pineapple Express” costar James Franco created one of the night’s more susceptible moments by pretending to smoke a joint onstage. The two gave out the award for Best Summer Movie So Far to Robert Downey Jr. for “Iron Man.” An amused Downey thanked them for the “intoxicating introduction.”

Zac Efron took home some of the night’s popcorn for Breakthrough Performance in “Hairspray,” while Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman were voted for Best Kiss in “Step Up 2: The Streets” (ahead of smooches between Ellen Page and Michael Cera in “Juno”; Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey in “Enchanted”; LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer in “Disturbia”; and Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”).

The Best Fight award went to Sean Faris and Cam Gigandet for their battle in “Never Back Down,” with Faris humorously thanking his grandmother for voting “5 million times” for him.

Mike Myers hosted the event, his second time after the 1997 edition, and invited comedian Dana Carvey for a “Wayne’s World” reunion.

Coldplay performed “Viva la Vida” for the first time ever from their upcoming album “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends,” while the Pussycat Dolls performed “When I Grow Up.”

The 17th Annual MTV Movie Awards was broadcast live from the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, California, safe and sound from the fire that blazed through Universal Studios.
