Acrobat.com Closes The Gap Between Desktop And Web Tools

Acrobat.com is intended to be more than a community site for file-sharing, word processing, and Web conferencing; it is intended to make the transition from desktops to Web tools that combine communication, productivity and collaboration capabilities in the easiest of ways.

The software, which is in public beta for now, enables users to enjoy the benefits of PDF, Adobe Flash and Adobe AIR technologies together, by delivering an online experience that puts traditional office productivity tools behind.

This is definitely one way of responding to initiatives such as Google Docs. For that, Acrobat.com comes with Adobe Buzzword, a Web-based word processor that enables users to co-author or share documents, and allows the document to be saved in PFD format.

Another service included is Adobe ConnectNow, the Web-conferencing service that provides desktop-sharing, video and voice conferencing and integrated chat capabilities. However, as Read Write Web highlighted, the service has its limitations is terms of number of people that can use the service simultaneously (only three).

The centralized file-sharing system allows the conversion to PDF format of up to five documents, while at the same time supports high-quality, Web-embeddable documents. The service allows users to see and launch image and PDF files in the browser, without having to use any other application.

MyFiles is a file-sharing organizer and storage space that makes documents easy to find, by enabling users to browse them by name, author, date and other criteria. It also offers up to 5 gigabytes of storage space.

Moreover, Acrobat.com will enable Acrobat 9 (which had a simultaneous launch) users to access a “personal workspace in the clouds” available from virtually anywhere. This will allow them to use Acrobat.com as a central location for sharing and collecting forms, as well as navigate PFD documents with colleagues.

For those who wish to try it, the English version of the Acrobat.com beta is available for free signup here.
