"Kung Fu Panda" Sends Zohan To Second Spot In Friday Box Office

The animation movie Kung Fu Panda debuted on the first place in this Friday box office. The movie, which has opened in 4,114 theaters, earned $20,000,000 in ticket sales.

Jack Black is the voice of a great big panda living in ancient China, all wooly and lazy and likeable, who seeks to transcend his earthly round puffy forms in order to become a revered kung fu master.
Po works in his adopted father’s noodle shop, a goose named Mr. Ping voiced by James Chan. He is learning to make noodles but his dreams of joining his kung-fu heroes never fade away.

His dreams appear to materialize when he finds himself amongst the Furious Five - Master Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Master Crane (David Cross), Master Monkey (Jackie Chan), Master Viper (Lucy Liu), and Master Mantis (Seth Rogen) – named the Dragon Warrior and in the hands of Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), who must train him.

The animation by DreamWorks does a charming job of illustrating the tranquil surroundings, in soft colors and subtle twinkles. The detailing is impressive, with hairs and feathers perfectly visible on each of the animated characters and the fighting scenes, which happily abound, are most enjoyable to watch, by both younger and older audiences.

It is very probable that “Kung Fu Panda” will surpass “Horton Hears A Who!” which earned $45 million in its opening weekend.

With only $14,850,000 in ticket sales, “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan”, the latest comedy with Adam Sandler, made it to the second spot. The movie opened in 3,462 theaters. Adam Sandler signed in for the main character’s performance, but also for both screenwriting and producing the movie.

Sandler plays Zohan, an Israeli agent working in a hush-hush intelligence service, loved by everyone, but most important, by girls. Only that Zohan is not happy with his life and is determined to leave it behind and pursue his dream, that of becoming a hairstylist. Therefore, he leaves his mission of tracking down a Palestinian terrorist, the Phantom (John Turturro) and fakes his own death in an ambush to get away. And it’s not very hard to imagine where Zohan would leave to make his dream come true: America, obviously!

“Sex and The City” is still attracting the moviegoers, and the movie ranked third with $7,300,000.

The movies in which Sarah Jessica Parker and costars Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall return in their career-defining roles as Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha has opened on the first place last weekend, pushing the return of Indiana Jones to the second place.

This Friday, “Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull” was again behind “Sex And The City” with $6,540,000 in ticket sales.

“The Strangers”, Bryan Bertino’s horror movie, gained the fifth spot with $3,100,000. The movie, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, tells the story of a couple, Kristen and James, who is heading to the vacation home of James’ family, located deep into the dark, scary woods. They seem to take the trip in order to refresh or repair their relationship. Once they arrive at the house, they have to put on hold their one on one quality time, as three masked killers, including a woman, begin to hunt them down.

The other five movies that made it into Top 10 this Friday are: Paramount’s “Iron Man”, “The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, “What Happens In Vegas”, “Baby Mama” and “Made Of Honor”
