WWDC 2008: Rumor Roundup

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference '08 is due to start tomorrow in San Francisco. In his keynote address tomorrow, Steve Jobs will dispel any remaining mystery regarding his company's new products and short-term strategy.

The subject of numerous discussions, not yet confirmed by the company, but considered to be a sure thing by everyone, is the launch of the new iPhone II. The 3G version of the iPhone will operate on AT&T’s faster network, thus enabling customers to experience a significant speed boost with their service.

Especially the European mobile carriers requested a 3G iPhone. In Europe, business users and consumers in 18 of the EU 25 countries are benefiting from commercial 3G services, and network deployments are underway in another 4 countries. So it’s no wonder that Apple’s interest would be to have a 3G iPhone, as the company hopes to sell 10 million units by the end of 2008.

According to numbers released by Gartner on Friday, Apple is now the third largest smartphone maker in the world and the second largest in the U.S.

It is said that the device may also come with GPS navigation, built-in instant messaging and a video-chat feature. According to Fortune, all this could be made available for the very reasonable price of $199, which is rather surprising, given the fact the existing iPhone versions go for $399 and $499.

Also, allegedly on their way are the new versions of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. It is said that they would come with modified designs, as well as with a new feature possibly consisting of a multi-touch track pad surface.

Next up, we may get the chance to see a preview of Mac OS X 10.6, also known as Snow Leopard, normally scheduled for release next year. It was said that it would feature significant "performance enhancements and stability improvements," in order to correct all the problems complaint about with the OS X 10.5, or Leopard.

There are a lot of rumors going on about the WWCD, and for now, the one that seems to be closer to reality is the 3G iPhone.
