With Voodoo Envy 133, HP Enters Ultra-Thin Race

HP launched yesterday in Berlin its latest ultraportable laptop, Voodoo Envy 133, which looks to be a serious contender for Apple's MacBook Air and Lenovo's ThinkPad X300.

It seems like the phone market isn’t the only one paying attention to Apple. After the Cupertino company unveiled earlier this year is MacBook Air, a lot of companies have started to offer similar laptops.

After Lenovo launched ThinkPad X300, now it is HP’s turn to introduce its contender.

The Voodoo Envy 133 is over half an inch thin and it weighs less than 3.4 pounds. It based on Intel Centrino technology and it has a 13.3-inch diagonal LED WXGA screen capable of 1,280x800

In fact, Vooodoo Envy 133 uses the same processors as MacBook Air and Lenovo ThinkPad: the Intel SP7700 and SP7500.

Intel revealed that the future versions of Envy, Air and ThinkPad will use its next-generation chips which use 45-nanometer process technology, Montevina.

Montevina will come, according to Intel, with a Penryn processor, a new chipset, and an integrated Wi-Fi/WiMax radio that will come as an option as part of the Centrino brand. The second generation Penryn processor will feature 1066 MT/s FSB and is planned to consume no more than 29W, compared to Merom's 34W TDP, and will also debut the SSE4.1 instruction set, which will add 47 new instructions to SSSE3.

Voodoo Envy 133 offers either an 80 GB 4200 RPM hard drive or a 64 GB solid-state disk and the graphic solution is represented by an integrated X3100 graphics chip.

The carbon fibre casing and fused composite glass covering the display provide surprising strength and durability, HP said.

Voodoo Envy 133 includes Ethernet and wireless connectivity and a variety of I/O ports, including headphone/microphone, HDMI, USB 2.0 (1x) and a shared e-SATA/USB. Similar with MacBook Air, Voodoo Envy 133 offers an external optical unit.

The laptop will be delivered with a version of Linux, called VIOS, which can be used to quickly use Firefox or Skype. The price of Voodoo Envy will be somewhere around $2000.

Two months ago Lenovo launched ThinkPad X300, an ultrathin notebook, weighting 2.93 pounds and 0.73 inches in its thinnest point. The ThinkPad X300 includes 3 USB drives and a DVD-RW drive. Lenovo’s ultraportable offers wireless and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and a 10-hour battery.

At the same time, the notebook features a 64GB solid state hard drive, 2.0 GB RAM and an Intel Core Duo 1.2 GHz processor.
