Night Shyamalan's Latest B-Movie

Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan, best known as Night Shyamalan, has opened up about his latest thriller, "The Happening." Shyamalan only managed to write and / or direct a single good movie, 1999's The Sixth Sense, which was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It appears that he finally understood he is really a B movie guy and now tries to make the most of it.

Shyamalan now acknowledges that he wanted "The Happening," starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, to be a "fantastic, fun B-movie," he told Reuters.

Both his 2006 flop "Lady In the Water" and "The Village" were actually big-budget B movies, but people apparently were expecting something else following The Sixth Sense's success. They were hit with harsh reviews because people failed to see Shyamalan as he really is: a very good director of mediocre movies.

His latest thriller is about an invisible killer which spreads throughout the U.S. Northeast. It exploits the current paranoid mood: terrorists, government conspiracies, global warming changes and whatnot. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have already posted reviews which pan the film.

Shyamalan is often accused of being more of a director and less of a screenwriter. He has even been hit with plagiarism accusations for The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village screenplays. He is married to Indian psychologist Bhavna Vaswani. The couple has two daughters.
