Judd Apatow is preparing another of his trademark comedies, with his cast neatly nearing completion: Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill have joined “Funny People,” reports Variety.
Judd Apatow will direct “Funny People” for Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures, with Universal distributing worldwide next summer. The ensemble cast already included Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann and will now feature Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill.
Interesting mix that. Goofy comedian Sandler and dramatic actor Bana sharing scenes? That has to be good.
Apatow has been mysterious about his upcoming project, says Variety, revealing only that the movie takes place in the world of standup comedy. The main character is a comedian who has a near-death experience.
Bana is known today for serious roles he has played in films such as “Troy,” “Munich” and “The Other Boleyn Girl.” The Australian actor however got started as a stand-up comedian in his native country.
He next stars as the villain Nero in “Star Trek” and plays opposite Rachel Weisz in the film adaptation of “The Time Traveler’s Wife.”
Hill is becoming a frequent collaborator of Apatow’s, as he starred in last year’s hit “Superbad,” co-produced by Apatow, and appeared in “Knocked Up” and “The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” directed by Apatow.
Rogen has also worked with the director before, as well as with Hill, in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up.”
The same goes for Mann, who is married to Apatow.
The threads keep intertwining, as Apatow joined forces with Sandler and Robert Smigel to write the script for “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan,” released last Friday.
Apatow Prods. and Happy Madison will co-produce “Funny People,” while Apatow will produce with Clayton Townsend and Barry Mendel. Jack Giarraputo, Rogen and Evan Goldberg are exec producers.
Production begins in September in Los Angeles.
