Robert Sylvester Kelly, known as R Kelly, was acquitted today, Friday, of all charges of child pornography. Although twelve witnesses identified Kelly as the man in a nauseating sex tape which documents sexual activities involving a young girl of around 13 years old, and 14 people identified the girl in the video, Kelly got away and was found innocent.
Kelly's defense team claimed the tape is a very good fake, despite overwhelming testimonies to the contrary, including that of a woman who appears in the video. Kelly’s attorneys branded witness Lisa Van Allen a “liar” and “extortionist.”
R. Kelly faced up to 15 years in prison but now he is free to go. The case dates back to February 2002, but the trial was delayed a stunning six years. The sex tape at issue was sent to the Chicago Sun-Times which broke the story to the public. The girl's parents have denied that their daughter is on the tape, backing R. Kelly.
The tape, which was also leaked on the Internet, depicts no actual intercourse. Thus the 21 counts of having sex with a minor had to be reduced to soliciting a minor for child pornography, seven counts of videotaping the acts, and seven counts of producing child pornography.
The prosecution paid a lot of attention to details, pointing out each moment on the tape where authorities believe a crime was committed, but it appears that the twelve official jurors - eight men and four women - have found that there wasn't enough evidence to put Kelly behind bars.
Kelly is technically married to Andrea Lee, a dancer, but they are allegedly in the midst of a divorce. She previously claimed that Kelly was abusive towards the end of their marriage. The couple has three children, including two daughters and a son.
