George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series, the first six Star Trek films and one episode of Star Trek: Voyager, is just one of many Californians which obtained a marriage license in the possibly short lived homosexual wedding ruling in California. A May 15 California Supreme Court ruling legalized same-sex unions.
George Takei obtained a license to marry his partner Brad Altman. The Japanese America, 71, and the 54-year old Brad Altman have been together for more than two decades. He recalled growing up in American concentration camps and said the legalization means that the United States can change.
Lawmakers of the Supreme Court also ruled against delaying enforcement of the decision until after the November election, when the citizens of California would have voted to decide whether to reinstate a ban on gay marriage. A change has been made in the protocol of the ceremony - the word "bride" and "groom" on marriage licenses was replaced with "Partner A" and "Partner B." California is the second state after Massachusetts to legalize same-sex nuptials. It is also the first to offer licenses to out-of-state residents, which is why many gay couples from other states have also lined up to get their licenses.
According to a survey conducted by the Williams Institute at UCLA's School of Law, the number of gay marriages will swell if the anti-gay-marriage initiative is voted in November. The UCLA study forecasts that about 51,320 gay California couples and 67,513 from out of state will marry in the state during the next three years. The survey hasn’t been released yet, but the info contained in it was provided by The Los Angeles Times.
