Spore Creature Creator Spawns "Sporn" and Upsets EA

The innovative Spore video game has seen its first component launched: the game's creature maker. Released for both PCs and Macs, the tool allows fans of the game to design funny-looking animals which will eventually populate the game when it is launched.

Some have already used the tool to create phallic or other sex-charged animals for upload on Sporepedia. This type of creations are in a class of their own: they are "sporn." Most notably, bloggers Tim Edwards over at PC Gamer created what he calls the world's first Spore penis; he was quickly followed by a response by Kristen Salvatore at PC Gamer US. The latter's creation was "Boobalicious," which is actually two giant boobs on legs.

Electronic Arts was apparently upset and sent emails to all those who made vulgar shapes, also flagging their online accounts for TOS violations. EA says the creations are violating the Electronic Arts Inc Terms of Service, which reads in paragraph 54, that “strong vulgar language, crude or explicit sexual references” are not allowed on EA's sites.

Meanwhile others have created awkward looking incarnations of popular characters such as Mario, Yoshi, the Chimera, Master Chief, Metroids, Goombas, Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Gear Ray.

Also, Ars Technica has investigated how exactly will the Creature Creator fit into the full retail Spore game when it gets released this September. It turns out that it is a completely separate product, different from the creature creator tool within the full game. The standalone Creature Creator, a $10 buy, will however receive updates and patches and such.

Users have also speculated that if you will buy the full retail game, it's most likely that Creature Creator will have to be uninstalled to avoid conflicts with the in-game tool.

The actual game will be released this fall. It is a continuation of Electronic Arts' long-running Sim series and is designed by the same Will Wright. The videogame is designed to be accessible even for those who are not gamers. In fact, The Sims franchise usually appealed to an entirely different crowd than, let's say, Mass Effect or GTA.

The gameplay uses so-called procedural animation technology, which allows for extended customization of most features. The player will start by controlling a cell and ends up designing a galaxy. Despite being a single player game, it will actually have many online features which resemble those of a social network. The first release will come in PC, Mac, DS and Mobile versions.
