ESPN and ABC to Broadcast Online on Veoh

Walt Disney Co's ABC television network and ESPN cable sports network will start to broadcast online on Veoh. The service, which is freeware, allows viewing through the Veoh.com website of network television content, as well as user generated content.

ABC closed a deal with video-site Veoh.com, to will feature full-length episodes of the TV network’s most popular shows: “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy” or “Ugly Betty” fans will be able to watch their favorite shows online on the website. Also, the network's offerings and commercials will be displayed too.

The Veoh video site will also play short clips and highlights from ESPN programs. Matt Murphy, senior vice president ESPN Media Networks, said that it’s imperative for the company to constantly re-evaluate their business and look for new partnerships and business models.

San Diego, California-based Veoh was founded in 2003 by Dmitry Shapiro, with the first beta launched in March 2006. The company managed to secure about $40 million from the likes of Time Warner, Michael Eisner’s Tornante Company, Spark Capital, Shelter Capital Partners, Tom Freston's Firefly3 LLC and Jonathan Dolgen (the former Chairman of Viacom).

Veoh uses Adobe Flash-based streaming video for its website and peer-to-peer transfers for its VeohTV beta, which enables viewing in a high-quality. The latter is only available for Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X. The service is only available in around 30 countries, as the company blocks other IPs, allegedly to focus more on the countries which have the most viewers.
