FDA Makes Progress in Tracking down Salmonella Source

The FDA has announced that it is making progress in tracking down the source of the salmonella tomatoes that have made victims all over the country. The FDA also made a list of types of tomatoes that are safe to eat, and a list of the ones that could be dangerous.

According to the FDA experts, raw red plum, raw red Roma and raw round red are the tomatoes that people should be careful when making the decision to buy. On the other hand, it seems that cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, as well as tomatoes that have been grown at home or that are sold with their vines still attached, are safe to eat.

The Food and Drug Administration agency has also compiled a list of the US and Mexican states that are producing and shipping tomatoes that are believed not to be contaminated. If people can have access to the information regarding the place were the tomatoes they are wanting to buy have originated, than they should pay attention to it, since it could mean that they can purchase a product they can be sure that won’t hurt them.

During the last 2 days the number of people diagnosed with salmonella has boomed, reaching more that 160 cases. The first salmonella infections have been reported in April and since then there have been registered about 550 cases in 32 states.

The FDA said that finding the farms which could be responsible for the infections is not enough, and that all the intermediate stages in the distribution chain must be thoroughly inspected, since the contamination could have appeared there also. The FDA also announced that it has managed to track parts of the route that the tainted vegetables took, and that it hopes to find their origin soon.
