Two hikers got lost over the weekend but, in the end, they
managed to find their way back and showed up in a town near Mount
Shasta. According to The Associated Press, Patricia Giamoni and
her friend Salvador Frias were on Mount Shasta
in the weekend and got lost. Giamoni called 911 Saturday night but the signal
was lost before it could get through the sheriff’s department. Even if
authorities tried to redial, they couldn’t reach the hikers.
After a half an hour, the sheriff’s department found out
from Giamoni’s son that she called him, telling him she had been caught in high
winds and requested help. Even if rescuers had some coordinates of the area
where the two hikers got lost, they couldn’t be sure of the exact location.
“They weren't able to pinpoint their location,” Siskiyou
County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Susan Gravenkamp said, according to The
Associated Press.
Giamoni, 37, and Frias, 41 obtained a day permit to hike the
Cascade Range mountain, located about 200 miles north of Sacramento.
The helicopters sent to search the two hikers couldn’t get
through the thick fog which came from the fires that were across Northern California.
The two hikers rescued themselves, arriving Monday at noon
in a town located about 10 miles from the top of the Mount
Shasta. They were dehydrated but their general condition was good.
